Propaganda: Gender Conformity
When we began working on this project, I immediately wanted to base mine on social conformity. Initially, my idea was to create something that conveys the modern expectation of having some form of presence on social media. But the feedback I had received from the previous exercise swayed me to pursue gender conformity. Today, gender is being recognized more as a spectrum rather than assigned binary, meaning a person with male genitalia may consider themselves as neither a man nor a woman. Although modern practices mostly pertain to defining an individual on the binary system, there have been changes developing of the last few years. The phrase “Gender Fluidity,” describes every individual's free ability to shift along the gender spectrum. From this, I created the statement “Gender is Fluid,” to argue against conforming to binary gender expectations. So, with this in mind, I came up with the idea of portraying gender as an actual fluid.
In my poster, I have two sets of different colored pipes. The pink representing femininity and the blue representing masculinity. The pipes themselves represent society’s binary system of separation between genders. The pipe systems are broken along both the pink and blue circuits. This represents the shattering of gender social expectations. Gender fluids from both systems are mixing at the bottom of the poster, representing the abundance genders between the male and female extremities along the gender spectrum. I added several gender symbols to the fluid in hopes of educating the audience on other gender symbols outside the traditional binary system.
